Technical Hierarchy

Technical hierarchy is the foundation for an equipment reliability and maintenance program.  A good design represents corporate assets completely, logically, and consistently; provides a master data infrastructure to collect, merge, and analyze equipment reliability data; and defines facilities and equipment interrelationships in a manner that is both intuitive for users and can be interpreted by the system.  A good taxonomy design is also easy to maintain.

Taxonomy Definition

Taxonomy is a systematic classification of items into hierarchical generic groups based on common factors.  Relevant information is more likely to be found by logical progression from a general focus to a more specific focus.  Information summaries are defined in the context of their unique “parent-child” relationships.

ISPM Equipment Taxonomy Design

  • Systematic process for tabulating and grouping all enterprise assets 
  • Logical process for representing P&ID/engineering tag numbers
    • One unique ID for each object throughout all systems and records
    • All tag numbers represented in the system with exact character strings
  • Smart structure
    • Defines equipment interrelationships in a manner that can be interpreted by the system
    • Defines ISO 14224 equipment boundary envelopes in a manner that can be interpreted by the system
    • Structurally synchronized with ISO 14224 equipment subdivision
    • Differentiates between functional and physical aspects of equipment (consistent with ISO 15926-2)
    • Captures equipment use/location data (operating context)
  • Fully integrated with failure reporting process
    • Taxonomy synchronized with equipment subdivision (coding)
  • Compliant with ISO 14224:2006 and consistent with ISO 15926-2, Section E3.3
